Sher Bagh is a Jungle Lodge situated at the edge of the Ranthambhore National Park in Rajasthan. It's set amidst trees on a private estate, overlooking a valley and along its northern periphery. It is a ten minute drive from
the main entrance of the reserve.
The drive to the resort, which is located a little beyond the turn off to the park entrance,
is a bit of an adventure in itself but once you're there you'll definitely feel it's worth the effort and probably find that it adds to the required atmosphere. |

It is open to visitors for eight hours a day, broken into two segments – morning and afternoon. While the timings change marginally depending on the time of sunrise and sunset, they are usually from 06:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for the Morning drive, and 2:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the afternoon drive. There are two ways to go for your Jungle Safari. The first is the ‘Jeep’. These need to be booked at least 64 days in advance as the Rajasthan Forest Department allows only 14 Jeeps and 2 Deluxe Jeeps into the park for each of the two segments, so there is no guarantee for confirm jeep ride. The other is the 20 seater ‘Canter’ Safari Vehicle. A seat can be booked even on arrival at Camp, but it is advisable to book this in advance during peak season, December and January. Note: There are 2 safaris each day. General timings (subject to change) are: Morning: 0630 hrs to 1030 hrs; Afternoon: 1400 hrs to 1800 hrs. Its name comes from the vast fort, a citadel in the middle of the forest. The fort was in existence in the 8th century and the area around is littered with ruins: lake palaces, ancient step wells, cupolas, guard posts, temples and memorial stones, all bear witness to Ranthambhore's varied and fascinating history. Emperor Akbar fought a battle here for the control of the fort in the 16th century. An 18th century traveller described the fort as being famous throughout India, well protected, completely inacessible, concealed in mountainous regions where the ridges were high and surrounded the entire fort, leaving only the thick forest gorges below as entrances and exists which could be defended. Today this tract of land has another ruler: the tiger haunts the narrow gorges of the fort and has even been known to venture atop it. By the turn of the century the Ranthambhore forests had become the private hunting reserves of the Maharajas of Jaipur. Hunting was banned in 1971 and a few years later, Project Tiger was launched. Few knew then that Ranthambhore would become the finest tiger habitat in the world. |
