About Nainital Nainital A perfect Gem popularly called the lake district because of a string of closely located lakes Bhimtal, Sat Tal, Naukuchiya Tal and off course, Naini Lake. Nainital district has other claims to distinction also: Corbett, India's first National Park; Kathgodam, nucleus of the timber trade and a railhead for Kumoan; Bhowali, Major fruit market and Kaladhungi, fertile wheat bowl and home of Jim Corbett. For tourist who enjoy bustle, there is lot to do; boating or sailing in vivid colored yachts; horse riding; walking along shady roads; taking the ariel ropeway and shopping for woollen handicrafts, shapely candles and wickerware. Within panoramic Kumaon lies the district of Nainital. Its snow-capped peaks, verdant valleys, rolling meadows and crystal lakes have beckoned lovers of nature since ages. Dotted with lakes, Nainital has earned the epithet of 'Lake District' of India. The most prominent of the lakes is Naini Lake ringed by hills and named after the Goddess Naini. Nainital is a lovely hill-station surrounded by mountains on three sides. Once this area had many lakes and it was called the 'city of 60 lakes' or 'Chakta', though most have disappeared now. Today, the life of Nainital revolves around the lake of Naini. But there are few other lakes around Nainital which are equally beautiful and attractive as the Naini lake. |
